City of San Jose & Rotary Club of San Jose
The Rotary Club of San Jose provided the city with a universal playground designed to accommodate children across the full spectrum of physical and developmental abilities for shared play experiences. Going beyond standard ADA compliance, the PlayGarden's design promotes active engagement while creating a secure environment that builds children's confidence to participate. The facility supports various play styles, from cautious exploration to energetic activity, incorporating both active zones and quiet rest areas. Young visitors can experience diverse movement through rotating, swinging, sliding, climbing, spinning, and bouncing activities using equipment that offers varying levels of movement intensity and sensory input. Interactive elements including sand play areas, water features, and a universally accessible carousel enable different play experiences within a thoughtfully planned layout that promotes inclusive interaction.
Financial support from the Santa Clara County Office of Education demonstrates the playground's success in fostering integration among children with diverse abilities. The concept originated with Rotarian Julie Matsushima, who observed how traditional playgrounds often separate children with special needs. Her motivation came from wanting to see her twin granddaughters, Aimee and Chloe, play together despite Aimee's cerebral palsy diagnosis. Matsushima's leadership as former president of the Rotary Club of San Jose helped establish the PlayGarden as the organization's Centennial initiative.
Located near a San Francisco Bay tributary and beneath airport flight patterns, the 5-acre PlayGarden draws design inspiration from the nearby estuary environment, incorporating themes of flowing grasslands, moving water, and wildlife navigating through aquatic and aerial spaces. The fluid, open-ended character of this natural setting reflects the design's goals of encouraging movement and conveying the sense of limitless potential found in expansive views, water elements, and flight. The park's ongoing impact includes employing and training individuals with disabilities as maintenance staff. Both the Santa Clara County Office of Education and San Andreas Regional Center continue to provide programming support for their clients at the facility.
